Psychotherapy is beneficial in multifaceted ways, providing dedicated space and time for you to address your life’s journey, wherever you are on that journey. Researchers have found that the bond between you and your therapist has a significant and direct impact on your growth and success in therapy. That’s why it’s important to do your research, ask questions, and pay attention to your felt connection in your search for a therapist that’s right for you. So if you’re considering therapy — whether it’s to mend a relationship, recover from trauma, provide guidance for conflict, or improve your mental health — finding the right therapist is the first step, and here are some tips.
- Reach out to a therapist that addresses your area of concern – If you’re looking for a therapist to help with a specific mental health issue, check out the therapist’s bio, and inquire about the therapists’ relevant experience.
- Think about your needs and goals ahead of time – Sometimes we may not be 100% certain, but reflecting on what your best hopes are for therapy will be helpful to get things started. This is also an area that you can work on collaboratively with the therapist as you progress along. This area evolves; so don’t put too much pressure on yourself!
- Ask questions on things that are important to you – Make a list of questions before meeting with a potential therapist, so that you get the answers that will help you make the right decision for you. If you’re looking for culturally informed care or have had certain experiences of racism, or generational trauma, ask questions to see if the therapist is culturally informed and sensitve.
Regardless of what you’re coping with, finding the right therapist will make a difference in your journey. Remember, authentic human connection and building a therapeutic alliance is at the heart of effective therapy <3
